Steady and Connected Podcast: Episode 22
Same capacity, fewer places to put it.
You've cleared the plates, and it's twenty past seven, and there's nothing else in the evening. No pickup, nobody arriving home at ten wanting to talk about their whole day. Just the two of you, and an entire evening, which is the thing you said for years you wanted. And within about four days, you notice that you're watching them.
An anxious attachment pattern is a monitoring system, and in a house with children in it monitoring looks like competence, so it never has to be examined. The capacity was built over years, and it doesn't scale down because the demand did. This one-page guide is for the attention that is suddenly free, and for the contact that used to arrive without anybody having to ask.
Plenty of people find the first month lighter than they expected, and this isn't a claim that everybody struggles. This isn't couples therapy either — if what's arrived feels heavier and more constant than anything described here, this practice doesn't cover it, and that's worth taking to someone who can sit with both of you.

A single page for the watching, once it has one room left to do it in.
- Six things a re-aimed system can look like from the inside — the re-pointed radar, the phantom check, the manufactured errand, the audit, the quiet objection to the quiet, the long-distance version
- Where the watching used to go — named plainly, most of it useful and most of it invisible
- One contact that used to be automatic — the exchange that was logistics and was also contact
- One true, ordinary thing about them you'd stopped seeing
- The practice, and a reflection line for what you noticed
