Steady and Connected Podcast: Episode 25
The question underneath, and what could answer it.
Their phone lights up on the bench, face up, and you see a name. Not the message, only a first name, one you've heard them mention once or twice. They glance at it, put it back down, and carry on chopping the onion, and nothing about how they did it was different. For the next hour, you're in a conversation about nothing in particular, while the rest of your mind imagines a person in detail.
You're not doing anything wrong. There may be a question underneath that name, and it may not be about that person at all. This one-page guide is for finding the question underneath, and for noticing what could actually answer it.
This is a gentle experiment with no right result. Some evenings, the question will still be there afterwards, and that's fine. This isn't a technique for managing your partner, and it isn't couples therapy. And if there's real evidence that trust has been broken, or if your partner's behaviour leaves you uncertain on a regular basis, then this doesn't cover it. A real fear about a real situation is proportionate, and it's worth taking to someone who can sit with it, or with both of you.

A single page for the hour after a name appears, when the searching has started and nothing it finds settles anything.
- Six things the loop tends to look like — the imagining, the comparison, the research, the light question, the mood without a label, the mention count
- The moment — what raised it, only the facts
- The question underneath — it may be a version of, Am I enough?
- What could answer it — and whether anything about the other person can
- A reflection line for what you noticed
None of it can tell you whether you are enough, because that question isn't about them.
The prompts are fillable — type straight into the page on your phone or laptop, and save it.
