Remove the word, the category, and the source.
You'd been building up to telling them for a fortnight. You get about eleven words in, something about attachment, and they look up and say isn't that just putting people in boxes — not unkindly, almost fondly, and that was the end of it. A word like attachment tends to arrive carrying three things at once: a category, a claim about the person listening, and a source they didn't choose. And a framework arrives finished, which leaves them two moves — accept it, or dispute it. A specific evening leaves them a third, because both of you were there. This one-page guide is for getting your own evening down to its plainest version, with the word, the category and the source taken out of it.
This is for the ordinary version. If the pattern in your relationship is that nothing you say about yourself gets taken seriously, that is a different thing to a light remark about boxes, and it is worth taking to someone who can sit with both of you.

A single page for turning what you wanted to say into one evening, described plainly.
- Six ways the dismissal tends to sound — the personality quiz line, the everyone version, the completed arithmetic, the sourcing question, the polite nod, the counter-reading
- What happened — one evening, a room, and what was actually done or said, with no conclusion attached
- What happened in me — first person, in the body, and not what it says about either of you
- What I noticed afterwards — the hour after, which is usually the part worth telling
- The practice, and a reflection line for what you noticed
Refusing a framework is not refusing the person holding it.
The prompts are fillable — type straight into the page on your phone or laptop, and save it.
